Despite my stubborn delay, I finally gave in and joined Twitter to begin following different media outlets and industries on behalf of my clients.

Of course, it wasn’t long before I realized I couldn’t just follow other conversations; I had to take part in them myself.

The reason I put up such a fight about joining Twitter was that I didn’t see how people had time to follow and tweet so much throughout the day. Social media is part of the life-blood of my workplace, so everyone kept arguing that this wasn’t something I needed to ‘make’ time for, it was something that I should just be doing along with checking e-mail, entering creative and Web requests, writing, etc.

I am not exaggerating when I say that my days are non-stop. I can’t remember the last time, if there ever was a time, where I was able to sit down and just work on a long-standing project that needed attention. Everything is extremely fast paced and I feel like I’m always on deadline and pushing just a little bit further.

Twitter seemed like one more item to add to my ‘to do’ list. One more thing to do for my professional development and client portfolio.

That is, until I discovered some of the other people, places and things I could follow.

In addition to finding literary critiques, bands and music publications and coffee shops, my new interest (a.k.a. obsession) is the endless different cities, states and countries to follow. Tourism bureaus worldwide have joined Twitter, posting updates on the history, upcoming events and travel tips for their locales. I’m sure I’m at least a couple years late to the game, but now that I’ve caught on/up, I’m beginning to follow places I’ve been that I would like to visit again as well as places that I’m planning to visit in the near future.

It’s very interesting how different places are using Twitter, how often they’re posting new content, what they’re saying, etc. I can’t wait to see what new tips and landmarks I uncover leading up to my next big trip in the spring.
