We’re still learning the best places to hike around Cheyenne, Wyoming, and have really enjoyed exploring Curt Gowdy State Park, Vedauwoo Recreational Area, Pole Mountain Open Space, and Red Mountain Open Space.
During my parents’ recent visit, we took the opportunity to check out a few new hikes in nearby Medicine Bow National Forest. About 1.5 hours from home, this area has a variety of hiking trails at around 10,000 feet that are accessible in summer as well as snowmobiling and other snow-based trails for use during the winter.

We spent a good part of the day driving through the mountains with stops to check out a couple short hikes that were easily accessible from the road.
Miner’s Cabin Trail
One was Miner’s Cabin trail which – believe it or not! – takes you to an abandoned miner’s cabin and nearby historical mining ruins via a short loop trail with interpretive signs along the way.
Even if you don’t want to hike the trail, the parking area is a great observation point for nearby Medicine Bow Peak. The trail itself is well marked and in good condition. In addition to the loop around the ruins, you can take an offshoot near the derelict cabin for a longer out-and-back hiking experience.

Lake Marie Trail
We parked at the Mirror Lake picnic and fishing area to catch the trail over to nearby Lake Marie. Alternatively, you can park in the West Lake Marie parking area and walk the trail over to Mirror Lake. Either way, you’ll have a nice out-and-back walk between both lakes.
There were quite a few people enjoying the picnic tables and playing along the shore at Mirror Lake. I managed to capture one gentleman who was actively trying to catch some fish in one of my shots!

We didn’t have any trouble finding the trail, which wound through some trees but frequently opened out to stunning views of the nearby peaks. We stopped to take pictures and admire the wildflowers along the path and enjoyed the sunny weather.
We followed the trail along the south side of Lake Marie and crossed a bridge over some small rapids to reach our turnaround point. We saw a few people across the main road from us and I have since learned that’s the access point for the Lake Marie Falls Loop Trail. We’ll have to check that one out next time!

We had beautiful weather for exploring the national forest, and I really enjoyed checking out a few trails in the area. We’ll definitely be back to tackle the summit hikes, and I wouldn’t mind returning in the fall or winter for some of the winter sports and activities.
Another awesome area for spending time outdoors not too far from home!
